The priorities include securing amenities and common areas from possible projectiles that could damage property or cause injury. They will be removing all loose material and trash prior to Friday afternoon to limit the possibility of wind born debris.

In preparation for the possible impact of Hurricane Irene, it is important to remember to bring in any objects that can blow away, including garbage cans, lawn furniture, garden tools, grills, plants, etc. and anchor any large objects that cannot be brought inside. We STRONGLY encourage you to visit our website at http://cmgcharleston.com/storms.htm to view additional resources that can help you prepare your home and family, which you will want to do as soon as possible. The major aspects of the project improvements are as follows:

The widening of Bees Ferry Road from two lanes to four lanes for the majority of the project with standard left and right turn lanes where needed.
The widening of Bees Ferry Road to six lanes between Grand Oaks Boulevard and the proposed intersection of West Ashley Traffic Circle to the north of Glenn McConnell Parkway.
Installation of curb and gutter, a 10-foot multi-use path (bicycles and pedestrians) on the west side of Bees Ferry Road that will tie into the multi-use path along Ashley River Road, and a five-foot wide sidewalk along the east side of the road.
The realignment of the intersection of Bees Ferry Road and Savannah Highway to a 90-degree angle and the addition of a stoplight. The new intersection will be approximately 1,500 feet east (toward Main Road) of its present location.
Stoplight upgrades will be made on Bees Ferry Road at its intersections with Ashley River Road, Glenn McConnell Parkway and West Ashley Traffic Circle. The upgraded stoplights will consist of decorative mast arms and include pedestrian hand/man signals for improved crosswalks.
Providing two left-turn lanes at the intersection of Bees Ferry Road and Ashley River Road traveling north on Ashley River Road toward Summerville.
Providing a free flow right turn lane at the intersection of Bees Ferry Road and Savannah Highway traveling south on Savannah Highway.
A landscaped median from Savannah Highway to Grand Oaks Boulevard.
Improvements to roadway and offsite drainage including new catch basins, cleaned ditches, curb and gutter, larger sized drainage pipes and water quality measures.
Efforts to protect numerous grand oak trees that are within the limits of the project.
Replacement of the existing bridge over Church Creek Canal with a new bridge.

Looking forward to 2011 at Jasmine

Dear Homeowners:

First, let me say it was a pleasure meeting those in attendence at the first annual meeting. Temperatures can drop dramatically over night after sunset and early morning hours. We ask residents to be mindful and careful when stepping outside their homes especially onto their sidewalks and streets when icy conditions can occur. Your H.O.A. provides limited services to the property including periodic power washing; termite bond; roof replacement; and landscape maintenance. Again, these are abnormal conditions and temperatures for this area of the country but they can occur. Please note that rock salt on your sidewalk can cause damage to the concrete so Calcium Chloride is recommended. Calcium Chloride does not harm concrete and actually meats ice in much lower temperatures then Rock Salt. We also wish to stress the importance of citizens doing their part to protect themselves by not presenting opportunity-criminals with the chance to ruin your holiday.
Additional officers will be on high-visibility patrol around shopping areas, banks, and the like. They will also be available to provide bank escorts for businesses that request them.
A particular problem this time of year is theft from automobiles and residential burglaries. These are the most preventable crimes. If citizens remove the opportunity, the crime is less likely to occur, and some types cannot occur at all.

While Shopping or Going Out:
• Secure valuables out of sight in your trunk. BUT, Be aware that many cars now have fold-down seats or a remote trunk release inside the car. These conveniences make your trunk vulnerable to thieves willing to break a window.
• If at a mall or a shopping center, periodically go to the car and lock away purchases so they will not “disappear” when you put them down trying-on clothes or at the food court.
• Safeguard your purse, wallet, bank cards, and personal information. Identity thieves thrive in this environment.
• Keep close tabs on your children while shopping. With so many people it is easy for them to become lost. Make sure they know their full name, your full name, address, phone, and your cell or pager number to reach you if you get separated.
• Be aware of your surroundings going to your car, going into and out of your house, and while at the ATM.

At Home:
• Make sure to keep doors and windows locked.
• Turn on outside lights at night.
• Report persons or vehicles roaming your neighborhood, day or night so police may check them. They may be simply looking at Christmas lights, or they may be “casing” houses to burglarize.
• Place your tree where the gifts will be less visible from outside. Thieves like window-shopping through your windows.
• After Christmas, don’t put the empty boxes out on the curb. This makes it easy for burglars to decide which houses to burglarize (ie: new computers, TVs, electronics, video games…). Break down boxes and put them in the trash, making sure to save all paperwork. Also remember many electronic devices require original boxes for warranty repair.
• Immediately make an inventory listing the model and serial numbers of new items (and old ones if you haven’t already) and engrave personal markings on them

If Leaving Home (On a trip or just for a little while):
• Make it look like you are still there.
• Timers on exterior lights, interior lights, and TVs will help make it look like you are home. Don’t leave an answering machine message saying you are gone, in fact turning it off would be better.
• Double check all doors and windows, including second floor and basement. The doors should have dead-bolts; key locks for windows are also available.
• Have the neighbor pick up mail, papers, and ads, put out your trash can, and park in your driveway. Give them emergency and cell numbers to reach you.
• Call the police department to request a periodic residence check (“Keep-A-Check”) while you are away. (CPD Dispatch 577-7434)
• When you return, look around outside first. If you see any evidence of a break-in, do not go inside. Go to a neighbor’s house and call police. The burglars could still be inside.

While traveling: THINK SAFETY
• Before you leave, inspect the car for safety (lights, belts and hoses, fluids, wipers, tires-both wear and air – DON’T FORGET TRAILER LIGHTS).
• Pack expensive items in the trunk, or under coverings to keep them out of sight.
• Pack safely. Items stacked in the back of a van, wagon, or SUV will become 60mph missiles in a crash! They also block the driver’s view. Items secured to the roof greatly alter the vehicle’s handling in wind and emergency maneuvers.
• When you stop, take the keys and lock the doors. This applies all of the time, at home and away. An unlocked, running car invites a thief.
• Use a CLUB or other device when parking for the night or at shopping centers Keep doors locked while driving. It adds strength in a collision.
• Use seat-belts and child restraints properly.
• Be careful with bank, gas, and credit cards.
• Take regular rest breaks.
• Never send your children into restrooms alone.
• Store money in separate places to minimize loss or theft.
• Stay on roads you know and take maps, cell phones, and chargers, as well as safety items like blankets, flashlights, jumper cables, a jack, and a good spare tire.
• Drive carefully- better than those around you. You need to get there alive!

Have a wonderful holiday season. Remember, most crimes and accidents are preventable. Officers are working hard to locate and stop crime, but everyone must do their part to lower their risk.

Annual Meeting

Just wanted to thank everyone who attended the first Annual Meeting of Jasmine Row and Jasmine Gate H.O.A. Scientists can now predict hurricanes, but people who live in coastal communities should plan what they will do if they are told to evacuate.

Step 1: Get A Kit / "To-Go Bag"
Get an Emergency Supply Kit, which includes items like non-perishable food, water, a battery-powered or hand-crank radio, extra flashlights and batteries. You may want to prepare a portable kit and keep it in your car. This kit should include:
Copies of prescription medications and medical supplies;
Bedding and clothing, including sleeping bags and pillows;
Bottled water, a battery-operated radio and extra batteries, a first aid kit, a flashlight;
Copies of important documents: driver's license, Social Security card, proof of residence, insurance policies, wills, deeds, birth and marriage certificates, tax records, etc.
Make sure you have a "to-go bag" ready in case you need to evacuate, include:
Water and non-perishable food;
Battery operated radio and batteries so you can get important information from local officials;
First aid kit;
Flashlight;
Maps
Important documents such as proof residence, pictures of your family including pets, insurance policies, and tax records;
Comfortable clothing and blankets;
Unique family needs such as prescription medications, pet supplies, infant supplies or any other unique need your family may have;
Step 2: Make a Plan
Prepare your family

Make a Family Emergency Plan. Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to know how you will contact one another, how you will get back together and what you will do in case of an emergency
Plan places where your family will meet, both within and outside of your immediate neighborhood.
It may be easier to make a long-distance phone call than to call across town, so an out-of-town contact may be in a better position to communicate among separated family members.
You may also want to inquire about emergency plans at places where your family spends time: work, daycare and school. If no plans exist, consider volunteering to help create one.
Plan to Evacuate
Identify ahead of time where your family will meet, both within and outside of your immediate neighborhood.
Identify several places you could go in an emergency, a friend's home in another town, a motel or public shelter.
If you do not have a car, plan alternate means of evacuating.
If you have a car, keep a half tank of gas in it at all times in case you need to evacuate.
Take your Emergency Supply Kit.
Take your pets with you, but understand that only service animals may be permitted in public shelters. Plan how you will care for your pets in an emergency.
Take a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) class from your local Citizen Corps chapter. Keep your training current.
Step 3: Be Informed
Familiarize yourself with the terms that are used to identify a hurricane.

A hurricane watch means a hurricane is possible in your area. Be prepared to evacuate. Monitor local radio and television news outlets or listen to NOAA Weather Radio for the latest developments.
A hurricane warning is when a hurricane is expected in your area. If local authorities advise you to evacuate, leave immediately.
Hurricanes are classified into five categories based on their wind speed, central pressure, and damage potential. Category Three and higher hurricanes are considered major hurricanes, though Categories One and Two are still extremely dangerous and warrant your full attention.
Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale Scale Number (Category) Sustained Winds (MPH) Damage Storm Surge
1 74-95 Minimal: Unanchored mobile homes, vegetation and signs. 4-5 feet
2 96-110 Moderate: All mobile homes, roofs, small crafts, flooding. 6-8 feet
3 111-130 Extensive: Small buildings, low-lying roads cut off. 9-12 feet
4 131-155 Extreme: Roofs destroyed, trees down, roads cut off, mobile homes destroyed. Beach homes flooded. 13-18 feet
5 More than 155 Catastrophic: Most buildings destroyed. Vegetation destroyed. Major roads cut off. Homes flooded. Greater than 18 feet

Hurricanes can produce widespread torrential rains. Floods are the deadly and destructive result. Slow moving storms and tropical storms moving into mountainous regions tend to produce especially heavy rain. Excessive rain can trigger landslides or mud slides, especially in mountainous regions. Flash flooding can occur due to intense rainfall. Flooding on rivers and streams may persist for several days or more after the storm. Learn more about preparing your home or business for a possible flood by reviewing the Floods page.
Prepare Your Home

Cover all of your home's windows with pre-cut ply wood or hurricane shutters to protect your windows from high winds.
Plan to bring in all outdoor furniture, decorations, garbage cans and anything else that is not tied down.
Keep all trees and shrubs well trimmed so they are more wind resistant.
Secure your home by closing shutters, and securing outdoor objects or bringing them inside.
Turn off utilities as instructed. Otherwise, turn the refrigerator thermostat to its coldest setting and keep its doors closed.
Turn off propane tanks.
Ensure a supply of water for sanitary purposes such as cleaning and flushing toilets. Fill the bathtub and other large containers with water.
Find out how to keep food safe during and after and emergency by visiting: http://www.foodsafety.gov/keep/emergency/index.html
Prepare Your Business

Plan to stay in business, talk to your employees, and protect your investment.

Carefully assess how your company functions, both internally and externally, to determine which staff, materials, procedures and equipment are absolutely necessary to keep the business operating.
Identify operations critical to survival and recovery.
Plan what you will do if your building, plant or store is not accessible.
Consider if you can run the business from a different location or from your home.
Develop relationships with other companies to use their facilities in case a disaster makes your location unusable.
Learn about programs, services, and resources at U.S. Small Business Administration.
Listen to Local Officials
Learn about the emergency plans that have been established in your area by your state and local government. In any emergency, always listen to the instructions given by local emergency management officials.

Federal and National Resources
Find additional information on how to plan and prepare for a hurricane by visiting the following resources:

Federal Emergency Management Agency
NOAA Hurricane Center
American Red Cross
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Center for Disease Control
Encourage Electronic Payments for Federal Benefit Recipients

Keep in mind a disaster can disrupt mail service for days or even weeks. For those who depend on the mail for their Social Security benefits, a difficult situation can become worse if they are evacuated or lose their mail service – as 85,000 check recipients learned after Hurricane Katrina. Switching to electronic payments is one simple, significant way people can protect themselves financially before disaster strikes. It also eliminates the risk of stolen checks.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury recommends two safer ways to get federal benefits:

Direct deposit to a checking or savings account is the best option for people with bank accounts. Federal benefit recipients can sign up by calling (800) 333-1795 or at www.GoDirect.org.
The Direct Express® prepaid debit card is designed as a safe and easy alternative to paper checks for people who don’t have a bank account. Sign up is easy – call toll-free at (877) 212-9991 or sign up online at www.USDirectExpress.com.
Signing up for direct deposit or the Direct Express card is a simple but important step that can help protect your family’s access to funds in case the unthinkable were to happen. If you or those close to you are still receiving Social Security or other federal benefits by check, please consider switching to one of these safer, easier options today.

Recycle Bins

I have had some questions regarding recycle bins. The method that this water is produced is just like the water that forms on the outside of a glass with ice in it. The warmer air from your home, meets the colder surface of the evaporator coil and naturally, condensation occurs. The bad part happens when you find the air conditioner drain line clogged and a water leak on the floor!

The water that comes from your AC Unit, runs down the sides of the coil and collects inside the condensate pan, eventually reaching the condensate drain and flowing off to the drain method your installer chose. When the condensation drain becomes gummed up or plugged, that same innocent water can back up and leak, and can literally ruin your life!

Cleaning Your AC Condensate Pan and Drain Line
Face it, if you are not going to have a service company come out and service your air conditioner every season, you are going to need to do a few things on your own. Fortunately, you can do this before an AC Water Leak happens!

According to the Tampa Handyman, one method he uses is to just grab his wet/dry vacuum, and use it to draw all the build up from your drain line, from the outside of the home, where it exits! While this will work for some, there are a few other methods to clean your AC Condensate Drain as well.

Gravity or Pumped AC Condensate Drains
In almost every instance, you will have either:

Gravity Condensate Drain, where the water flows from your evaporator coil drain pan, directly into a small PVC drain line, and either into a drain system, in or outside your home.

As you can see in the top picture, the installer of this condensate line took the time to install a few extra pieces of the PVC drain, to facilitate the cleaning of the drain lines. Yours may or may not have these caps in place, but if you end up having to cut into the piping system to clean it, (common on older systems) you can rebuild it with the cleanouts in place! All pieces for the new drain can be picked up at a hardware store, for less than $10, or by clicking the links below.

Condensate Pump Drain System, where the water from your coil pan is piped into a small condensate pump, that automatically turns itself on and off as the water fills the collection tray.

In most cases, the PVC piping or clear plastic condensate hose, will fit directly into a hole on the top of the condensate pump, filling the reservoir. A second hose is then connected, to channel the water outside the home or into a drain system. Condensate pump systems are most commonly used in areas below the level of the homes drain.

Air Conditioner Condensate Pumps
Regardless of which system your AC system uses, almost all blockages occur in the small bend, called a trap. The trap system always holds a small amount of water, that is there to keep fumes and other objects from backing in to the system. Over time, gum builds up... the trap becomes clogged and you have a plugged ac line!

Cleaning Your AC Condensate Drain
The most common method of cleaning, is to gain access to your drain line... whether that is within a cleanout or from inside the evaporator coil drain pan, and simply flush the line with either compressed air or a water hose, forcing everything from the inside to outside. (Never flush water from outside the home, to the inside of the unit, a mess will occur!)

If you don't have access to an open end of the drain from inside, you may need to disconnect or cut the drain line to perform the cleaning.

This should be done at least once every year and more often in areas where you use air conditioning more than 6 months of the year! Doing so will prevent the AC drain from leaking water into the home!

cleaning air conditioner drain, central air conditioner leaking water, drain water from window air conditioner, condensation in ac drain pan, condensate drain cleaning, AC condensate drain line, clogged ac drain line, cleaning airconditioner condenser tray, clean out air conditioner drains, home ac leaking water

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jasmine Gate/Jasmine Row Annual Meeting

We are in the process of setting up an Annual Meeting of the homeowners for Jasmine Gate and Jasmine Row at Bolton's Landing. We have had many architectural requests that have come in to the office and we are dealing with each and every one of them.

As management agent for Bolton's Landing, Community Management Group is charged with making sure the restrictions are upheld. We try to do this and I might say in a consistant manner with all residents. It is in the best interest of all owners that these restictions from your legal documents are upheld, becuase to do otherwise will eventually affect property values. Although rarely struck by
hurricanes, parts of the Southwest United
States and the Pacific Coast experience
heavy rains and floods each year from
hurricanes spawned off Mexico. The
Atlantic hurricane season lasts from June
to November with the peak season from
mid-August to late October.
Hurricanes can cause catastrophic damage
to coastlines and several hundred
miles inland. Winds can exceed 155
miles-per-hour. Hurricanes and tropical
storms can also spawn tornadoes and
microbursts, create surge along the coast,
and cause extensive damage due to inland
flooding from trapped water.
Tornadoes most often occur in thunderstorms
embedded in rain bands well away
from the center of the hurricane; however,
they also occur near the eye-wall. Typically,
tornadoes produced by tropical cyclones
are relatively weak and short-lived
but still pose a threat.
A storm surge is a huge dome of water
pushed on-shore by hurricane and tropical
storm winds. Storm surges can reach 25
feet high and be 50-100 miles wide. Storm
tide is a combination of the storm surge
and the normal tide (i.e., a 15 foot storm
surge combined with a 2 foot normal high
tide over the mean sea level creates a 17
foot storm tide). These phenomena cause
severe erosion and extensive damage to
coastal areas.
Despite improved warnings and a decrease
in the loss of life, property damage continues
to rise because an increasing number
of people are living or vacationing near
coastlines. Those in hurricane-prone
areas need to be prepared for hurricanes
and tropical storms.
A hurricane is a type of tropical
cyclone, the generic term for a low
pressure system that generally
forms in the tropics. The ingredients for a
hurricane include a pre-existing weather
disturbance, warm tropical oceans, moisture,
and relatively light winds aloft. A
typical cyclone is accompanied by thunderstorms,
and in the Northern Hemisphere,
a counterclockwise circulation of
winds near the earth’s surface. Tropical
cyclones are classified as follows:
Tropical Depression. An organized
system of clouds and thunderstorms
with a defined surface circulation and
maximum sustained winds of 38 mph (33
knots) or less. Sustained winds are defined
as one-minute average wind measured at
about 33 ft (10 meters) above the surface.
Tropical Storm. An organized system
of strong thunderstorms with a defined
surface circulation and maximum sustained
winds of 39-73 mph (34-63 knots).
Hurricane. An intense tropical weather
system of strong thunderstorms with
a well-defined surface circulation and
34 ARE YOU READY?
FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY Hurricanes are classified into five categories
based on their wind speed, central
pressure and damage potential (see chart
below). Category Three and higher are considered
major hurricanes, though Category
One and Two are still extremely dangerous
and warrant your full attention.
Inland/freshwater flooding
from hurricanes
Hurricanes can produce widespread torrential
rains. Floods are the deadly and
destructive result. Excessive rain can also
trigger landslides or mud slides, especially
in mountainous regions. Flash flooding
can occur due to the intense rainfall.
Flooding on rivers and streams may persist
for several days or more after the storm.
The speed of the storm and the geography
beneath the storm are the primary factors
regarding the amount of rain produced.
Slow moving storms and tropical storms
moving into mountainous regions tend to
produce more rain.
Between 1970 and 1999, more people lost
their lives from freshwater flooding associated
with landfalling tropical cyclones
than from any other weather hazard related
to tropical cyclones.
See the “Floods” chapter for more specific
information on flood related emergencies.
What to do before
a hurricane
1. Know the difference between “Watches”
and “Warnings.”
• Hurricane/Tropical Storm Watch—
Hurricane/tropical storm conditions
are possible in the specified area,
usually within 36 hours.
• Hurricane/Tropical Storm Warning—
Hurricane/tropical storm conditions
are expected in the specified
area, usually within 24 hours.
• Short Term Watches and Warnings—
These warnings provide detailed information
on specific hurricane threats,
such as flash floods and tornadoes.
Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale
Scale Number Sustained Winds Damage Storm
(Category) (MPH) Surge
1 74-95 Minimal: Untied mobile homes,
vegetation and signs. 4-5 feet
2 96-110 Moderate: All mobile homes, roofs,
small crafts, flooding. 6-8 feet
3 111-130 Extensive: Small buildings, low-lying
roads cut off. 9-12 feet
4 131-155 Extreme: Roofs destroyed, trees
down, roads cut off, mobile homes
destroyed. Beach homes flooded. 13-18 feet
5 >155 Catastrophic: Most buildings
destroyed. Vegetation destroyed.
Major roads cut off. Homes flooded. >18 feet
FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY
ARE YOU READY? 35
2. Listen for local radio or television
weather forecasts. Purchase a NOAA
Weather Radio with battery backup
and a tone-alert feature that automatically
alerts you when a Watch or Warning
is issued (tone alert is not available
in some areas). Purchase a batterypowered
commercial radio and extra
batteries as well because information
on other events will be broadcast by
the media.
3. Ask your local emergency management
office about community evacuation
plans relating to your
neighborhood. Learn
evacuation routes. Determine
where you would
go and how you would
get there if you needed
to evacuate. Sometimes
alternate routes are desirable.
4. Talk to your household
about hurricane issues.
Create a household disaster
plan. Plan to meet at
a place away from your
residence in case you
are separated. Choose an out-of-town
contact for everyone to call to say they
are safe.
5. Determine the needs of your household
members who may live elsewhere
but need your help in a hurricane.
Consider the special needs of neighbors,
such as people that are disabled
or those with limited sight or vision
problems.
6. Prepare to survive on your own for at
least three days. Assemble a disaster
supply kit. Keep a stock of food and
extra drinking water. See the “Emergency
Planning and Disaster Supplies”
and “Evacuation” chapters for more
information.
7. Make plans to secure your property.
Permanent storm shutters offer the
best protection for windows. A second
option is to board up windows with
5/8" marine plywood, cut to fit and
ready to install. Tape does not prevent
windows from breaking.
8. Learn how to shut off utilities and
where gas pilots and water mains are
located.
9. Have your home inspected
for compliance with local
building codes. Many of the
roofs destroyed by hurricanes
were not constructed or retrofitted
according to building
codes. Installing straps or
additional clips to securely
fasten your roof to the frame
structure will substantially
reduce roof damage.
10. Be sure trees and shrubs
around your home are well
trimmed. Dead limbs or trees could
cause personal injury or property
damage. Clear loose and clogged rain
gutters and downspouts.
11. If you have a boat, determine where to
secure it in an emergency.
12. Consider flood insurance. Purchase
insurance well in advance—there is
a 30-day waiting period before flood
insurance takes effect.
13. Make a record of your personal property.
Take photographs or videotapes
of your belongings. Store these documents
in a safe place.
Create a
household
disaster plan.
Plan to meet your
family in case you
are separated.
Choose an out-oftown
contact for
everyone to call to
say they are safe.
36 ARE YOU READY?
FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY What to do during a
hurricane threat
1. Listen to radio or television newscasts.
If a hurricane “Watch” is issued, you
typically have 24 to 36 hours before
the hurricane hits land.
2. Talk with household members. Make
sure everyone knows where to meet
and who to call, in case you are separated.
Consider the needs of relatives
and neighbors with special needs.
3. Secure your home. Close
storm shutters. Secure
outdoor objects or bring
them indoors. Moor your
boat if time permits.
4. Gather several days’ supply
of water and food for
each household member.
Water systems may
become contaminated or
damaged. Sterilize (with
diluted bleach solution
of one part bleach to ten
parts water) and fill the
bathtub to ensure a supply of safe
water in case you are unable or told
not to evacuate. Refer to the “Shelter
and Emergency Planning” and “Disaster
Supplies” chapters for important
information.
5. If you are evacuating, take your disaster
supply kit with you to the shelter.
Remember that alcoholic beverages
and weapons are prohibited within
shelters. Also, pets are not allowed in
a public shelter due to health reasons.
See the “Animals in Disaster” chapter
and contact your local humane society
for additional information.
6. Prepare to evacuate. Fuel your car—
service stations may be closed after the
storm. If you do not have a car, make
arrangements for transportation with
a friend or relative. Review evacuation
routes. If instructed, turn off utilities
at the main valves.
7. Evacuate to an inland location, if:
• Local authorities announce an evacuation
and you live in an evacuation
zone.
• You live in a mobile home or temporary
structure—they are particularly
hazardous during hurricanes
no matter how well fastened
to the ground.
• You live in a high-rise. Hurricane
winds are stronger at
higher elevations.
• You live on the coast, on
a floodplain near a river or
inland waterway.
• You feel you are in danger.
8. When authorities order an
evacuation:
• Leave immediately.
• Follow evacuation routes
announced by local officials.
• Stay away from coastal areas, riverbanks
and streams.
• Tell others where you are going.
9. If you are not required or are unable
to evacuate, stay indoors during the
hurricane and away from windows and
glass doors. Keep curtains and blinds
closed. Do not be fooled if there is a
lull, it could be the eye of the storm—
winds will pick up again.
• Turn off utilities if told to do so by
authorities.
• If not instructed to turn off, turn the
refrigerator to its coldest setting and
keep closed.
• Turn off propane tanks.
Alcoholic
beverages and
weapons are
prohibited within
shelters. Also,
pets are not
allowed in public
shelters for
health reasons.
FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY
ARE YOU READY? 37
10. In strong winds, follow these rules:
• Take refuge in a small interior room,
closet or hallway.
• Close all interior doors. Secure and
brace external doors.
• In a two-story residence, go to an
interior first-floor room, such as a
bathroom or closet.
• In a multiple-story building, go to
the first or second floors and stay in
interior rooms away from windows.
• Lie on the floor under a table or another
sturdy object.
11. Avoid using the phone
except for serious emergencies.
Local authorities
need first priority on telephone
lines.
12. See the “Evacuation” chapter
for important information.
What to do after
a hurricane
1. Stay where you are if you
are in a safe location until local authorities
say it is safe to leave. If you
evacuated the community, do not
return to the area until authorities say
it is safe to return.
2. Keep tuned to local radio or television
stations for information about caring
for your household, where to find
medical help, how to apply for financial
assistance, etc.
3. Drive only when necessary. Streets
will be filled with debris. Roads may
have weakened and could collapse.
Do not drive on flooded or barricaded
roads or bridges. Closed roads are for
your protection. As little as six inches
of water may cause you to lose control
of your vehicle—two feet of water will
carry most cars away.
4. Do not drink or prepare food with tap
water until notified by officials that it is
safe to do so.
5. Consider your family’s health and safety
needs. Be aware of symptoms of stress
and fatigue. Keep your household together
and seek crisis counseling if you
have need. See the “Mental Health and
Crisis Counseling” section of the “Recovering
from Disaster” chapter for more
information.
6. Talk with your children
about what has happened and
how they can help during the
recovery. Being involved will
help them deal with the situation.
Consider the needs of
your neighbors. People often
become isolated during hurricanes.
7. Stay away from disaster
areas unless local authorities
request volunteers. If you are
needed, bring your own drinking
water, food and sleeping gear.
8. Stay away from riverbanks and streams
until potential flooding has passed. Do
not allow children, especially under
the age of 13, to play in flooded areas.
There is a high risk of injury or drowning
in areas that may appear safe.
9. Stay away from moving water. Moving
water only six inches deep can sweep
you off your feet. Standing water may
be electrically charged from underground
or downed power lines.
10. Stay away from downed power lines
and report them to the power company.
Report broken gas, sewer or water
mains to local officials.
Consider your
household’s
health and
safety needs
and be aware
of symptoms
of stress and
fatigue. Seek
crisis counseling
if you have need.
38 ARE YOU READY?
FEDERAL EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY 11. Don't use candles or other open flames
indoors. Use a flashlight to inspect
damage.
12. Set up a manageable schedule to repair
property.
13. Contact your insurance agent. An
adjuster will be assigned to visit your
home. To prepare:
• Take photos of your belongings and
your home or videotape them.
• Separate damaged and undamaged
belongings.
• Locate your financial records.
• Keep detailed records of cleanup
costs.
14. Consider building a “Safe Room or
Shelter” to protect your household. See
the “Thunderstorms” chapter for additional
information in the “Tornadoes”
section.
15. See the “Recovering From Disaster”
chapter for more important information

Charleston County Recycling News

Wednesday, April 28, 2010
Charleston County News Release

MEDIA CONTACT
Name: Jennie Davis Flinn, Charleston County Public Information Officer
Phone: (843) 958-4012
Email: jflinn@charlestoncounty.org

Release Number: 3099
Date: April 20, 2010

County Expands Recycling Program to Accept Cardboard at Curbside
Charleston County will begin picking up corrugated cardboard and more paper items during its normal curbside recycling routes

During last Saturday’s 11th Annual Earth Day Festival, Charleston County Council member Colleen Condon announced that Charleston County’s Environmental Management Department has expanded its recycling program to accept corrugated cardboard as part of its residential curbside recycling program. Corrugated cardboard is considered cardboard boxes with a middle “waffle-like” layer.

In addition to cardboard, the County is now also accepting all paper items to include envelopes with plastic windows, gift wrapping paper, etc.

“We are excited to announce that Charleston County now accepts cardboard and all types of paper in our curbside bins and dropsites,” Condon said. “If you can tear it, recycle it in your bin.”

In honor of Earth Day, the County has compost on sale for the month of April at the Bees Ferry Landfill for $1 per bag or $5 per ton, which is half off the regular price.

How to recycle cardboard:
• Residents with curbside service can now place cardboard at the curb with their regular recyclables that are placed in one bin for plastic bottles, glass bottles, aluminum cans, steel cans and aerosol cans, and in another bin for paper, such as magazines, newspaper, junk mail, paperboard (examples: cereal boxes, tissue boxes, etc.) and office paper.
• Curbside residents should flatten and place cardboard boxes, up to three feet by three feet in size, between or under their two bins or inside a separate bin. Curbside recycling in Charleston County is collected bi-weekly in the urban areas starting at 7 a.m.
• Rural residents, as well as curbside users who have cardboard pieces larger than three feet by three feet, can drop their cardboard off at the drop site locations and County staffed Convenience Centers. Charleston County Environmental Management maintains 40 cardboard drop sites and eight Convenience Centers located throughout the County.
• Residents in the rural parts of the County can utilize drop sites and Convenience Centers for recycling services. Drop site locations are open 24 hours per day and seven days a week and are not staffed. Convenience Centers are staffed by Environmental Management Department employees.

Residents can call (843) 720-7111 or visit recycle.charlestoncounty.org to find out their recycling collection day, the nearest drop site location, and Convenience Center addresses and hours of operation.

Important Annoucement

May 3, 2010
The Charleston Police Department would like to remind residents and merchants that it is always important to lock your vehicle and to leave it empty or secure valuables from view.

In recent weeks there have been sporadic incidents of thefts from vehicles in all areas: neighborhoods, apartments, shopping areas... Almost all of these involve vehicles left UNLOCKED with valuables inside (I-Pods, GPS, wallets, purses, etc.) at least one car was stolen at a convenience store, left running while the owner went inside "just for a minute".

There have also been several burglary reports of different sorts, including several to sheds and garages. This time of year there is high demand for lawn equipment and some unscrupulous persons would be willing to buy/use possibly stolen tools, or may even steal them themselves.

Put good locks on storage areas and photograph / record your tools' serial numbers to more readily reclaim them if we locate them.

As always, we remind you to call 911 if you see a crime in progress, or 577-7434 for non-emergencies.
Thank you.
For more information contact the Crime Prevention office at 843-769-7407

Jasmine at Bolton's Landing Website

Please visit Jasmine at Bolton's Landing on the Community Management Group's website at www.cmgcharleston.com

There you'll find your Legal Documents CC&R's, Bylaws, ARC request forms, important phone numbers and some useful articles. Census responses are used to calculate congressional representation and the distribution of taxpayer money back to states, cities and local governments. An accurate count ensures your community receives its fair share of political representation and funding. Local governments also use census figures to plan roads, schools and other infrastructure. Businesses also use the numbers to plan commercial developments.

How can individuals help? Remind your neighbors that the census is a foundational part of our democracy.
